Virginia W. Smith

Virginia Wilson Smith September 27, 1926 - October 9, 2020 passed away peacefully.

Virginia was the daughter of the late George Wilson and Ruth Webber Wilson and grew up in Quincy, MA. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal and graduated from Quincy High School with her father George Wilson as Principal. While at Quincy High School she was in the NRA rifle club/team.  During World War II she, along with her father and brother George, worked as a draftsman at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy drawing plans for warships and merchant vessels.  Virginia continued her education at Brown University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. At Brown she participated in the fencing program. She met her future husband Howard Gray Smith while at Brown and they married in 1948.

Virginia and Howard raised a family of four sons in Braintree, MA and spent summers on Cape Cod eventually building a second home in Sandwich, MA. Virginia was a devoted, loving mother to her four boys.
She was an avid gardener and landscaper, the family genealogist, a talented artist and an award winning photographer as a member of the South Shore Camera Club. She was also a puzzle enthusiast; so much so that she earned the nickname “the puzzle lady”. Always known for her quick wit and sense of humor, she was inseparable from her husband Howard who passed in 2002. They spent many of their later years enjoying their home in Sandwich, MA.

Virginia is survived by her sons Douglas Smith of Snow Hill, NC and his daughter Caitlin Bonham Smith of New Zealand, David Smith and his wife Nancy Curtin of Plympton, MA, Alan Smith and his wife Jennifer Thies of Silver Spring, MD and Dana Smith and his wife Lisa Hines-Smith and daughters Cassandra and Alexandra Nevaras of Plympton, MA.  She was preceded in death by her brother George Wilson and his wife Eleanor Nevosh Wilson of Walpole, MA.

There will be a private ceremony at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA where she will be rejoined with her husband.
